About Us
Founded in Laguna Beach in 2001, Wendt Gallery has become one of the country's premiere galleries for the exhibition of Modern and Contemporary Art. Although it began with a focus on regional painting, the gallery quickly transformed itself into a more diversified and broad-ranged institution with the addition of several noted collections and a newfound focus on artists outside California.
In 2009, the Southern California gallery exhibited a historic collection of Modernist works from the 20th century to the present. "Champions of Modernism III" gave well-deserved attention to an incredible yet sorely under-appreciated movement. Only in the last 25 years has Modernism begun to enjoy its status as one of the great movements of 20th century art. Vassily Kandinsky, Rudolph Bauer, Hilla Von Rebay and Rolf Scarlett lead the ensemble, while Irene Rice Pereira, Xanti Schawinsky, and Seymour Fogel join to fill the gaps from the early 1950's through to the 1980s.
Wendt Gallery is pleased to be the permanent anchor for the collection in the United States, hosting it out of the New York Gallery location.
Also In 2009, the gallery further expanded its fine art repertoire with the establishment of a Southeast Asian art program, with an emphasis on Contemporary Indonesian art. This world-class ensemble of Historic and Contemporary works of art features painting and sculpture from noted artists throughout Indonesia, Singapore and Southern China.
In addition to the contemporary Southeast Asian Art Program, the gallery is active in the secondary market of historical artists, including several 19th and 20th century Southeast Asian art works. Pieces by Affandi, Cao Tali, and CL Dake, as well as paintings and sculpture by American and European modernists such as Fernando Botero and Pablo Picasso will be featured.
